For a long time now, affirmations have been one of the most practiced ways of activating the Law of Attraction in spiritual work. If you can change the way you think, you can attract different thing into your life, right? While I agree in principle with that, and practiced and taught that for years, I always had a few nagging issues with the process. Firstly, our affirmations have to feel authentic. If you are struggling with self- esteem , and you affirm everyday, “I am beautiful and deserve all the abundance of the universe” – if you’re anything like me, it doesn’t matter how often I say that, my left brain kicks in and constantly disagrees with the statement. Yes – the idea is, if we repeat it often enough, we change that pattern. But what if there was an easier way, that felt more authentic?
Secondly, so many affirmations, leave everything we desire to show up in our lives to the universe, making it seem like God / the Universe is someone who can make or break our wishes. One of my favourite sayings is, "you cannot manifest from a place of stillness”. Let’s look at the following examples:
someone who is desperately looking for love may affirm multiple times a day “ I am open and ready for love”. It doesn’t matter how many times you repeat that affirmation, if you don’t actually go out and meet people, the chances of that happening are slim. The affirmation “My body is glorious and healthy” won’t work if you sit on the couch every single day eating fast food. “I’m growing in my career daily”, will not happen by magic if we aren’t learning and actively improving our skill set. You have to be an active participant in your own life. When we aren’t active in our own manifestation, we become victims. Why didn’t it happen for us? Why hasn’t the universe provided? Are we not good enough? Spiritual enough? And then the low self-esteem and self-doubt kicks in, and we start the entire cycle again.
Sometimes affirmations limit us. Some affirmations are what we have decided the end result needs to be, and then we affirm that over and over again. And yet nothing happens. Why? Perhaps, just perhaps, that end result is not where or what you need in your life, and is limiting your potential.
When I started studying Access Consciousness®, we were taught a new thought process that changed the way I looked at affirmations, and seemed to answer all these nagging thoughts I had. The idea with this tool is that we create limits for ourselves, multiple times a day. What if there was a way to tap into the unlimited possibilities that are available to each and everyone of us. As humans, we are very blinkered. We set our sights on a goal, and that’s all we can see infront of us. Our Higher selves, have a 360 degree view of what is actually available to us, and unlimited potential that we cannot see. What if, the direction we are heading in, is actually limiting us? If you had told me 15 years ago, that I would be doing what I do now, with a very successful holistic practice and school, I would have probably laughed at you. I was top of my game as a commercial film editor with my own company. That was my chosen career path and it was my main focus. I started studying holistic healing purely out of interest and a way to start healing myself. It was when I came across this tool, that my thought process started to change, and I started wondering if there was a different reality out there for me, one I had never considered.
many affirmations, are often a statement, with the answer we want attached to it. Most of us spend our entire lives looking for the answer. To get it right. To not be wrong. What if something else is possible? What if, we take that affirmation, and change it into a question? Living in the question is about exploring all possibilities.
The one key difference is that when you ask, it needs to be from the space of a true question. Not an answer with a question mark attached. An open ended question opens the door to a different set of possibilities, an infinite set of possibilities.
· Instead of asking “What’s wrong with me?” ask “What’s right with me I’m not getting?"
· Instead of asking “Could it get any worse?” ask “How does it get any better than this?"
· Instead of deciding “Nothing is going to change here” ask “What else is possible that I’ve never considered?"
If we took all the affirmations I mentioned earlier, and we substituted it with this one question:
What could I add to my life today to generate more money/love/abundance/joy....?
The energy behind what we are looking for changes entirely and it makes you an active participant, in what you would like to show up in your life, without limiting yourself. Spend some time, looking at your daily affirmations, and playing with how you rephrase them into an unlimited question. Put the questions out the universe as many times a day as you’d like, and watch what shows up for you. Here are a few ideas to get you started:
What do I need to do differently to achieve.....?
What energy, space and consciousness can I be today to achieve....?
What energy can I be to receive even more than I’m receiving now?
"I wonder how much fun can I have creating my future?""How can this turn out better than I could have imagined?"
What else can I create from here?
What new change is possible now?
Above all, have some fun, in finding new and glorious ways, to invite more magic into your life, unlimited magic.
